Subtle Shift in Routine Bowel Habits Became a Lifesaving Clue for Actor James Van Der Beek

James Van Der Beek, widely known for his role in Dawson’s Creek, recently revealed how a minor change in his bowel movements served as the early sign of stage 3 colorectal cancer—an early warning he initially dismissed. The actor, who maintained a healthy, active lifestyle and incorporated wellness routines like cold plunges, sauna, organic diet and biohacking, shrugged off the symptom, attributing it to his regular coffee habit, only to discover it indicated something far more serious.

Van Der Beek shared that he didn’t realize the recommended screening age for colorectal cancer had dropped from 50 to 45, as he assumed the older guideline applied. After the change in bowel habits persisted, he scheduled a colonoscopy, which confirmed advanced cancer.

Since then, he has become a vocal advocate for early screening. He is promoting the FDA-approved Shield blood test—a less invasive and more accessible option than colonoscopy. Research indicates that screening compliance significantly increases when it’s as simple as a blood draw. Van Der Beek urges anyone aged 45 or older, or those with a family history, to discuss screening with their doctor promptly.

His story underscores a worrisome trend: colorectal cancer rates are rising among younger adults, and symptoms often appear only in advanced stages. He hopes that by sharing his experience, he can inspire others to act early and possibly avoid the ordeal he endured.
