Former White Stripes frontman Jack White has publicly criticized President Donald Trump’s recent redecoration of the Oval Office, describing the new design as “vulgar” and “gaudy.” In an Instagram post shared on August 18, 2025, White featured a photo of President Trump meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the revamped office. The image highlighted the extensive gold accents and ornate decor, which White likened to a “professional wrestler’s dressing room.” He further commented, “Can’t wait for the UFC match on the front lawn too, he’s almost fully achieved the movie ‘Idiocracy.'”
White’s remarks were met with a sharp response from the White House. Communications Director Steven Cheung dismissed White as a “washed-up, has-been loser” and accused him of disrespecting the significance of the Oval Office. Cheung stated that White’s criticism was indicative of a stalled career and a lack of appreciation for the office’s historical importance.
This isn’t the first time White has publicly opposed President Trump. In 2024, he filed a lawsuit against the Trump campaign for using The White Stripes’ song “Seven Nation Army” in a political video without permission. White has also been vocal in his criticism of celebrities who have associated with Trump, calling out figures like Joe Rogan and Mark Wahlberg for “normalizing” his behavior.
The ongoing debate over the Oval Office’s decor reflects broader discussions about the intersection of politics, culture, and personal expression. As public figures continue to weigh in, the conversation about the symbolism and aesthetics of the White House remains a topic of national interest.
